the world would be a better place without…”so”
13 July 2009 in a pox on...…the word “so” at the start of posts, emails, comments etc
As in, “So, I was at work yesterday when [something that's likely to be very dull happened]“. It serves no purpose whatsoever, apart from to annoy me (which, I’m assuming, is NOT your intention). If I used it, this post would have started like this:
So, I was thinking about how I would like to inject Botox into the anuses of people who start there messages with “So”.
See how crap that is? Do you? DO YOU? It’s soooooooooooo passive it makes me want to pick you up, shake you until you haemorrhage and shout “stop being to arse-cringingly twee please [because I'm nothing if not polite]“. But I never actually do.
So, a pox on you if you do it. You know who you are (possibly).

Far, a long, long way to run.
, a needle pulling thread.
La, the note that follows so.

Rob on 13 July 2009“the note that follows [WHAT?!]“
VoodooMike on 13 July 2009It wasn’t at the start of a sentence, (so) I thought I was OK.
Rob on 13 July 2009Good point. Although technically the one you did omit wasn’t at the very start of the message, and thus doesn’t really count either. Blimey, this is more complicated than I first thought – I didn’t think it through.
VoodooMike on 13 July 2009Where do you stand on ‘see’ in similar positions? They’re both similar verbal devices to add a bit of a pause — like adding a preposition to the start of a sentence without actually committing a crime.
